Editing your robots.txt file is an advanced feature. Making changes to this file can cause issues with your site appearing in search results. Wix Customer Care cannot help you with any changes you make to your robots.txt file.
A robots.txt file tells search engines which of your site's pages to include or skip in their search results. Search engines check your site's robots.txt file when they
crawl and index your site. This doesn't guarantee that search engines will or won't crawl a page or file, but it can help prevent less accurate indexing attempts.

Tip:
- You can prevent search engines from indexing an individual page in your site's editor.
- You can also get more control over how search engines index your site's pages using the robots meta tag. For example, can use a "nofollow" tag to tell search engines not to follow any links on a page. Learn more about the robots meta tag
Understanding your robots.txt file
The robots.txt file contains instructions to allow or disallow certain requests from search engines. The “allow” command tells crawlers the links that they can follow, while the “disallow” command tells crawlers the links that they can't follow. It also includes the URL of
your site's sitemap file.
You can view your site's robots.txt file by adding "/robots.txt" to your root domain. An example would be:
https://www.mystunningwebsite.com/robots.txt.

Editing your robots.txt file
You can edit your site's robots.txt file using the Robots.txt Editor in your site's SEO & GEO dashboard. Your site’s robots.txt file allows search engine bots to access all of your site's pages by default. Bots may not be able to access certain pages if they are:
- Password protected pages
- Members only pages
- Pages that you prevented indexing for in your site's Editor or your site's SEO Settings
Before you make changes to your robots.txt file, we recommend checking
Google's guidelines and limitations for robots.txt files.
Important:
Editing your site's robots.txt file may cause issues with your site's pages appearing in search results.
To edit your robots.txt file:
- Go to SEO & GEO in your site's dashboard.
- Scroll down to Tools and settings.
- Click Robots.txt Editor.
- Click View File.
- Add your robots.txt file info by writing the directives under This is your current file.
- Click Save Changes.
- Click Save.
Tip:
- Search engines will update their cached version of your robots.txt file the next time that they crawl your site.
- If you need to update it faster, you can try submitting your homepage's URL to search engines.
Resetting your robots.txt file
If you changed your site's robots.txt file and want to change it back, you can reset it to its default state using the Robots.txt Editor in your site's SEO & GEO dashboard.
To reset your robots.txt file:
- Go to SEO & GEO in your site's dashboard.
- Scroll down to Tools and settings.
- Click Robots.txt Editor.
- Click View File.
- Click Reset to Default.
- Click Reset.
Tip:
- Search engines will update their cached version of your robots.txt file the next time that they crawl your site.
- If you need to update it faster, you can try submitting your homepage's URL to search engines.
Robots.txt error in Wix Site Inspection or Google Search Console
You may sometimes see errors such as
Blocked by robots.txt in
your Wix Site Inspection report or
your Google Search Console account.
If you see an error like this, you don't need to edit your robots.txt file, especially if you never edited it before. Instead, you should check your pages for the following settings:
- Search engines are prevented from indexing the page in:
- The page is password protected
- The page is for members only
If you need to update a page, Wix automatically updates your robots.txt after you publish the page. If you change your site's settings, your robots.txt file is updated immediately.
After you make a change, search engines will update their cached version of your robots.txt file the next time that they crawl your site. If you need to update it sooner, you can try
submitting your homepage to search engines for reindexing.
