One of the most important aspects about running an efficient online store is staying on top of inventory management. This article will walk you through some of the decisions you need to make to manage inventory smoothly for your business.
Should you track exact quantities?
Wix Stores offers 2 methods of inventory monitoring. You can choose one method for all your items, or choose different methods for different products.
Marking products as 'In Stock' or 'Out of Stock'
When creating or editing a product, you can leave the Track inventory quantity toggle off. This means you manually assign an inventory status for each product or variant ("In Stock" or "Out of Stock") and update when needed.
This method may be best for new businesses that don't yet have a lot of sales or businesses that sell only a few products.
Tracking specific levels
For many merchants, tracking specific inventory levels is a crucial part of their business.
When you create a product or variant, you can enter a specific stock amount. For example, when creating a blue hat product, you can set the stock level to show that you have 10 blue hats. Then, when a customer buys one of the hats, the inventory amount is automatically reduced to 9.
If that same hat comes in 2 sizes, you need to manage inventory for each of those variants.
Updating stock levels
You can update the inventory level of a particular product or variant by selecting the product in the Products tab and updating the inventory.
When you want to update inventory levels for more than one product, you can save time by doing so in the Inventory tab. There, you can more quickly update each product individually. You can also select multiple products and update them in one go.

Selecting what triggers inventory levels to update
When you track specific inventory levels, those levels update when a customer makes a purchase. However, you can choose exactly when the update occurs, when the order is placed or when you receive payment. Each of these options makes sense for certain stores, depending on a variety of factors.
