IPS Tag
1 min read
An IPS tag is a label which identifies the registrar that currently holds a .uk domain. They are sometimes called Registrar tags, Nominet tags, or Domain tags.
Nominet (the official registry for .uk domain names) issues IPS tags, and all hosting companies which host .uk domains are required to have a tag.
Every UK domain name ( .co.uk, .org.uk, .net.uk, etc.) must have an IPS tag specified to confirm which registrar currently holds the domain. This protects domains from being transferred away from a current owner. Only the current tagholder (registrar) or Nominet is able to update a domain's IPS tag.
You need an IPS tag when transferring your .uk domain from one service provider to another. You can contact your new domain provider to get their IPS tag before starting the transfer process.
