Social Media Marketing: Instagram Business vs. Instagram Personal Accounts
1 min read
Instagram offers different types of accounts based on your goals as a business. The three types of accounts are:
- Personal Instagram account: For the average Instagram user without features used by businesses.
- Business Instagram account: Built for businesses and brands with more features e.g. making appointments, call-to-action buttons and contacting customer service.
- Creator Instagram account: Built for content creators to help them gain fanbases, partnerships and brand recognition through social media.
In order to publish social posts from your site's dashboard you need to have a Business Instagram account.
If you have a creator account or personal profile you must switch it to a Business account before connecting to the social posts dashboard.
To switch from a personal profile to a business account:
- Open Instagram on a mobile device.
- Go to your profile and tap the Menu icon in the top right corner.
- Tap Settings.
Note: For some accounts the Switch to professional account option is directly under Settings. - Tap Account.
- Tap Switch to professional account.
- Tap Continue.
- Fill out your business details such as contact info and category. Learn more about setting up a Business account on Instagram.
Note about Creator accounts:
If you try to connect an Instagram Creator account, the connection steps will work since you're using a valid social media account. However, you won't be able to publish social posts to your Instagram.
