CMS: Add a New Field

Your field names appear as headings at the top of each column in your collection. You edit the fields for each item in your collection in the column below the field name. 

In your dataset, you connect elements to fields by selecting their field names from the drop-down menus. Make sure to give your fields recognizable field names to help you understand which fields you're connecting.

Field types determine which kind of content is stored in a field. When you add a new field in CMS, you can choose from the following types:

To connect page elements to collection fields, make sure to connect the relevant elements to their corresponding field types. For example, you can connect a text element to a Text or URL field, but not to an Image field.

While CMS ensures that you cannot add values with the wrong field type, please note that imported content or code additions may not be validated. For example, when importing content from a CSV file, you can import a text value into a number field. This triggers an error notification to let you know to correct it. 

You can also select items from the main field in a referenced collection to utilize the Reference field type. 

The field ID is automatically generated based on the corresponding field name. If you enabled Velo Dev Mode in your Editor, you can edit the field ID when you add a new field.

Important: Once a field has been created, you cannot modify it. Make sure to choose the appropriate field ID during the initial creation process.

The field ID plays a crucial role in referencing a specific field within your code when utilizing the Data API or Dataset API. To illustrate, let's say you want to insert an item using the Data API. In this case, you would utilize the field ID as follows:
