Setting Up Domain Forwarding to Your New Wix Site

  • Step 1 | Set up 301 redirects for pages on your new site
  • Step 2 | Connect your old domain to Wix
  • Step 3 | Connect the secondary domain to the primary domain
Use URL redirects to forward your domain to your new Wix site. 301 redirects can guide people from your old site to your new site, allowing you to keep traffic and SEO intact and avoid losing visitors while migrating your site over to Wix.
A 301 redirect is a permanent URL redirect from one URL to another. You can also use them to redirect one domain to another.
For example, if your site previously used the domain "old-domain.com", and your new Wix site uses the domain "mystunningwebsite.com", you can redirect visitors from the old domain to the new one.
Important:

Step 1 | Set up 301 redirects for pages on your new site

Create redirects for any old pages which have a new URL. For example, URL forwarding allows you to redirect an old "/contact-us" page to your new "/contact" page.
You can manually create 301 redirects for your pages using the URL Redirect Manager in your site's SEO Dashboard.

To set up a 301 redirect:

  1. Go to your SEO Dashboard.
  2. Select Go to URL Redirect Manager under Tools and settings.
  3. Click + New Redirect
  4. Select Single redirect.
Creating a single 301 redirect.
  1. Enter the old URL path you want to redirect from (e.g., /about-us) under Old URL.
  2. Enter the new URL that you want to redirect to:
    • For pages on your site: Start typing the URL slug of your new page and select it from the drop-down.
    • For external pages: Enter the entire URL that you want to redirect to.
  3. Click Save, or click Save & Add Another to add more.

Step 2 | Connect your old domain to Wix

Connect your old domain to your Wix account. This will be a secondary, external domain. Later on you can connect this domain to your primary Wix domain.

To connect your domain:

  1. Go to Domains in your Wix account.
  2. Click Add an Existing Domain.
  3. Click Connect a domain you already own.

  1. Select the site you want to connect your domain to and click Continue.
  2. Enter your domain name and click Let's Go.
  3. Click Yes, I own this domain under the search field.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect your domain.
Note:
Some domain providers support connecting your domain automatically. Depending on your provider, the connect flow may be different from step 7 above. Learn more about connecting a domain to your Wix account

Step 3 | Connect the secondary domain to the primary domain

Once you've connected your secondary domain, you can link it to your primary domain. If a visitor goes to your old (secondary) domain, they'll automatically be redirected to your primary domain.

To connect to your primary domain:

  1. Go to Domains in your Wix account.
  2. Scroll to the relevant domain and click the Assign button next to the text Not Assigned to a Site.
