Accessible Names

Accessible names are short titles (usually 1-3 words) that you can add to site elements and components.

Some visitors may be using screen readers or other assistive technologies while browsing the site. The screen reader 'reads' these accessible name, so visitors know the function and intent of the component.

We recommend following the Web Accessibility Initiative's guidelines when composing accessible names for your elements. Here are some of the main guidelines:

No. Accessible names are hidden from the live site, and can only be accessed by assistive technologies / software and search engines.

Decorative elements are elements that do not contribute to the content or function of the site, as they are there for aesthetic and design purposes only.

Depending on the element, you may see the option to mark it as decorative. If you enable this setting, screen readers and search engines recognize it is not necessary for the site's function and automatically skip it.

In order to avoid confusion, we recommend using unique names for different elements across the site.

Imagine a site contains two buttons - one to submit an invoice, and another to submit a contact form. Providing names that specify the buttons' different functions (e.g. 'Submit invoice' and 'Submit contact form') ensures site visitors can understand the purposes of each element.

Note: You can use the same name for elements that are functionally and visually identical.

Some elements require an accessible name. Wix provides a default for you, which you can change at any time. 

If you remove your custom accessible name from one of these elements, the name is reverted back to the default we've assigned.
