Create your own free MySpace layouts

Now that you can avoid the whole coding-technical process and still get an awesome design you have all this extra time on your hands…

Once you’ve logged in (it’s free to register with Wix if you haven’t already) you’re ready to get started and create your own free MySpace layouts. Choose the blank layout and click “edit”. It’s as simple as that…of course it helps if you have some ideas about the design. So here are some tips to creating your own layout from scratch:

  • Do Your Research & Get inspiration: Check out your favourite brands, art and bands. Check out your competition. Check out the Wix Gallery. What jumps out at you? What do you like and dislike? “Borrow” ideas you like – but be sure to make them even better!
  • What is the purpose & Who is visiting? Think about your MySpace Profile. Who are you trying to attract? And what would you like them to do there? Download a song, read your blog, add you to their friend’s list…What do they think is cool? and what might they expect to find? These type of questions should guide your design decisions.
  • Think about color Whether we notice it or not, colors have an emotional influence on us and impact the way that we judge reliability, quality and value of designs, products and services. Some colors are easier to read than others, too. Yellow backgrounds for instance can be stressful for the eye. And when there is a lot of text, it is better to put the text on a calming background like white or grey. So it helps to be mindful of the colors you choose for your MySpace design.   • Select the typography that fits your style Great typography is both attractive and functional at the same time –the best example is probably the FedEx sign with it’s subliminal arrow between E and X. Although images communicate more vividly, the way you present you text also impacts your visitors. Type, Size and Font Color all determine the effectiveness of your typography. As a result, chosen wisely and used carefully, typography can increase the effectiveness of your page.
  • Add Animation The most important thing to keep in mind when adding animation is to use it to contribute to your design without taking away from your Profile’s content. Don’t forget to keep your animation files small so that they can load within a few seconds! (Wix Flash website builder  does this automatically so if you’re using Wix it’s one less thing to worry about)
  • Experiment Try out a few different styles that work for you. With the Wix drag and drop builder , it couldn’t be simpler. And you can hit “preview” to see what it will look like after. Don’t forget to play around with the different media items on offer, or features like importing music and images from websites like Flickr and YouTube as well as your own archives.

And once you are ready – Publish you free MySpace layouts  to your MySpace page using the Wix publishing wizard (you hit “publish” > “embed”, copy the code and paste it into MySpace.)
