What’s the Fuss about MySpace
From Wix.com
These days it seems like anyone who is anyone is on MySpace. And it isn’t far from the truth. With literally millions of members MySpace around the MySpace has quickly become one of the most popular websites on the web. Although there seem to be other websites offering similar services, MySpace dominates. And I for one wanted to know – What’s the Fuss about MySpace?
“Are you on MySpace?” It started innocently enough. I had been convinced to go on a blind date. It was ok. Even good. But at the end he asked me: Are you on MySpace? I almost chocked. And then realised it wasn’t a trick person. Here I was meeting someone in person and he wanted to know about my online persona. And MySpace? But it got me thinking. Because it did seem like suddenly everyone was on MySpace (and facebook) these days.
I should add that my surprise also came from MySpace as the social network of choice. For one, social networking sites have been around for ages. And MySpace isn’t exactly the best looking site I’ve ever seen (I ask around my web designer friends and most wrinkle their nose. One goes so far as to recommend a bit of a facelift for the site itself.). But as the dating scene has taught me, looks aren’t everything. So I’m determined to dig deeper. And I start to ask the same question (and some more): Are You On MySpace?
Who is On MySpace?
It seems the answer to this question is just about everyone. A quick scan via the search function and some wider research shows me that MySpace has members from almost every country and culture around the world. And the age range is huge! This is not just for the young set. And it turns out a lot of my friends, and their friends, and their friends…are on MySpace. So I ask them –Why?
Why be on MySpace?
Like the diversity of the people on MySpace their reasons are just as varied. Not one of my friends gives me the same reason. Some are there to connect with friends, make friends, to find friends, to find a date, to do something while they’re at work, to learn more, to listen to music and discover new bands…
My more creative friends are also there to show of their works of art and music. And in these field’s it seems especially important. As one musician friend Alex explained to me: “If you want your band to work you better have a good MySpace! I don’t go to a band’s website – I always go to their MySpace page first. It’s quicker, they have their best songs, and I don’t need to click around to find what I’m looking for.” So it seems that if you’re a musician artist or entrepreneur MySpace is also ‘a must have’ site to launch and promote your business, music art and bands…
What I’m learning while I listen is that suddenly there is this place online where literally millions of people are gathering and connecting to each other…And to whom you can connect to using the various search features offered.
If you are a business that caters to these people, or you have a band or art and you are looking for fans – surely they are also here…wouldn’t it make sense to be somewhere they are visiting as often as everyday? (you can learn more about capitalizing on MySpace in this article)
Ok, so let’s say you think to join…what’s the process?
Opening a MySpace Account
The process of opening an account is fairly simple and takes place almost instantly. Simply go to MySpace.com and follow the steps to sign up. You’ll be asked for some basic information including your email address and to create a username and password (if you are thinking about using this to promote yourself consider your URL). And then you’re asked to agree to the terms of service to be granted membership. Then MySpace sends you an email and all you have to do is click on the link they provide to activate your account.
Designing your own free MySpace Layouts
This seems to be where a lot of the fuss comes in. MySpace members have a great deal of control over the appearance and content of their page. They are only limited by your own inner designer. And it seems that all over MySpace people are spending hours creating a perfect design that matches them, their music, their brand, their art…or whatever they feel like on the given day.
I’m at a loss but another designer friend shares a secret: try Wix.com. And it turns out after I try it using Wix.com’s editable layouts I am suddenly understanding why this is so fun afterall!
Apparently MySpace layout design used to be one of the most complicated parts of MySpace. However, these days, with free online platforms like Wix.com, it is not only incredibly easy to create a great MySpace layout, now you can also easily update it and change it anytime as well!
Anyway, I’m a bit of a changed woman and I’m starting to understand what the fuss is all about. Perhaps you are inspired to join and even design your own layout? If you are, a word of warning: Before you know it you may just be on MySpace with your own unique MySpace layout – that you designed yourself!
